WHAT IS A CAREER AND WHY IS PLANNING SO IMPORTANT?

  • A career is the cumulative work experience of what a person does during his or her lifetime.
  • Career planning is how we become knowledgeable about, and prepare for work as part of earning a living.
  • Career development begins early in one’s life and continues well into retirement.
  • It is an ongoing process that should be evaluated periodically to validate that our expectations and happiness are being fulfilled.

FOR THE STUDENT

High school (early grades) is a good time to begin planning.  Many think it is too early, but it is not.  It is an integral part of your success in determining college selection and planning for your future.  Are you selecting a college because you think the college “name” will lead you to a good job?  Are you considering a major that will lead to a marketable job?

Some of our services include:

  • Identifying values, interests and abilities
  • Evaluating personal skills, experiences and talents
  • Exploring career and post-secondary options
  • Planning for the future
  • Selecting a major in college
  • Mentoring, networking and internships
  • Learning how to make choices about your education and beyond
  • Special needs of individuals with “learning disabilities
  • Gaining self-awareness
  • Selecting high school electives
  • Making effective decisions
  • Using transferable skills

FOR THE PERSON MAKING CAREER CHANGES OR UNDECIDED

If you had the opportunity to do it all over again, would you still be in the same job?  Would you make the same decisions?  Or, would you take more control over your career direction?  Career planning can help you realize your true potential and assist you in dealing positively with career changes.

Trends in our occupational employment have changed significantly over the years.  When a person was hired for a job, it was thought to be until retirement.  That is no longer the case.  According to the Occupational Outlook Quarterly, changes that affect our economy and the demand for goods and services will directly affect the growth and decline of jobs.

College Bound and Beyond assists the college bound student with selecting college majors while Custom Career Counseling provides assistance to those making career change or life changes:

  • Learning about jobs in demand
  • Researching careers of interest and job opportunities
  • Recognizing and rejecting career stereotypes
  • Midlife career changes
  • Reflecting upon yourself
  • Using transferable skills
  • Identifying values, interests and abilities
  • Evaluating personal skills, experiences and talents
